What Is In The Index

This index holds every one of the 269,823 words the site knows, one page each, split into 26 lists by first letter. Each word page gives its definition, its Scrabble score, its Words With Friends score and every shorter word hiding inside it. The dictionary is the same one the solvers check against, so a word that has a page here is a word that will be accepted by the tools.

The letters are nothing like evenly loaded. S opens 30,766 words, C opens 24,261 words, P opens 23,510 words, D opens 16,062 words, A opens 15,851 words, while at the other end J opens 2,193, Q opens 1,360, Z opens 1,123, Y opens 997, X opens 305. That spread is why a rack full of common openers feels easy and a rack built round an X or a Z does not: there are simply fewer places for it to go.

By length, the commonest words are 9 letters, 41,139 of them, and the distribution falls away sharply in both directions. The longest entries run to 15 letters. The highest scoring word in the whole dictionary is RAZZAMATAZZES at 51 points in Scrabble before any premium square, which is more than most players score in a full turn.

178 of these words contain no vowel at all. That is 0.066 percent of the dictionary, and it is the list worth knowing by heart, because a rack of six consonants is otherwise a turn thrown away. 75 words use a Q with no U behind it, which is the other emergency worth preparing for. The full list of those is on words with Q and no U.

Anagrams are dense in here. The largest single group is 13 words built from the same letters: ARETS, ASTER, EARST, RATES, REAST, RESAT, STARE, STEAR, STRAE, TARES, TASER, TEARS, TERAS. Every word page lists the anagrams of its own entry, which is usually a faster route to a play than rearranging tiles by hand.

If you know how a word starts or ends rather than what it is, the pattern indexes are quicker than this one: words by starting letters, words by ending letters and words by letters inside. If you have the tiles and want every word they make, the unscrambler does that directly, and unscramble by rack has the common seven letter racks already worked out.
